Silver~Rose disbands due to personal differences between KAIKI and KOICHI
Silver~Rose was a visual kei band in Nagoya. They were active from 1989 to 1994 and are now disbanded.
For me, it's always been Nagoya Kei, but apparently there's a narrative that considers Kuroyume to be the first one Nagoya Kei band. Kuroyume is undoubtedly the most important and influential, but it definitely wasn't the first; Silver~Rose was the one who paved that path.
Obligatory caveat that not everyone agrees or uses the word the same way. But in general terms:
Silver~Rose was primarily active from 1989~1993. Their music was beat rock (think BOOWY or early BUCK-TICK), their lyrics were not dark, and their sound was generally not very aggressive.
Silver~Rose was not the only band who played that kind of music: in fact, it was the orthodox visual kei sound in the early years, and you could hear that kind of sound across the entire country.
When KUROYUME came along in 1991, they became popular really quickly because they had a sound that was not orthodox. It was more heavily influenced by positive punk and hardcore, more aggressive, much more theatrical, and the themes of their lyrics were much darker.
For a brief time, Silver~Rose and KUROYUME were equally popular in Nagoya, but KUROYUME quickly took off because of their unique sound, and became popular among the national visual kei scene. Silver~Rose did not.
When Silver~Rose disbanded (which KAIKI has literally said happened because he wanted to do a darker band), KAIKI went to ROUAGE, which was a dark band closer to KUROYUME; Kouichi went to Laputa, which was also dark; and KYO went to merrygoround, which was also dark.
So there was this group of Nagoya bands like KUROYUME, ROUAGE, Laputa, and FANATIC◇CRISIS who were popular outside of Nagoya, and they were all playing darker music than was typical of visual kei. Therefore fans started to use the term “Nagoya kei” to refer to that style.
So while “Nagoya kei” may have initially meant “any band from Nagoya,” by like 1996 or so it's really referring to “those dark bands from Nagoya.” (And there were still plenty of bands in Nagoya who were not dark and still stuck to those beat rock roots, but you rarely see them in conversations about “Nagoya kei” because they sounded like any other band across the country.)
So for Silver~Rose specifically, I think it's fine to think of them as a starting point for Nagoya kei because 3 members joined really important dark bands after. But Silver~Rose themselves were fairly orthodox.
And again, some people's definition of “Nagoya kei” is “any band from Nagoya,” which is fine. But the way Nagoya kei was spoken about in magazines and message boards was only the “darker” side of the scene.
Information that I'm looking for:
I have pretty much all their other videos, but never heard about that "1989 ~ 1992 HISTORY" you mentioned. Do you have any more info about this? My GRASSIC NONFICTION has just "1993" as a release date on the OBI and CD, no month or day informed.
No, I only have the Wikipedia entry for Silver~Rose listing "1989 ~ 1992 HISTORY", which should be accurate seeing as Yowmay has spent a lot of time updating it. By the way, if you have any more information regarding the release dates for these videos, please do add it! As for "GRASSIC NONFICTION", it is a fact that basically none of Silver~Rose's releases have a full release date on them, and hence I am looking for a flyer from when it was released to uncover the release date. Thank you very much!
Oh, cool! I had no ideia that Yowmay updated the Wikipedia entry himself. I think some of the CD booklets have biography pages and more info about every release. I'll check it out and try to scan the covers in good quality too! I'm curious about that "1989 ~ 1992 HISTORY, wish there was at least a photo or something like that.
Hey, I'm rewatching everything, adding scans and all the info right now (sorry for taking so long, had some trouble with my scanner). Already added some stuff about TV埼玉 SSC SILVER ROSE特集, KEEN KISS ME and 1992年6月22日 インクスティック.スズエ..
Do you have any idea if the date that appears right at the beginning or end of VHS tapes means something? Here's an example from KEEN KISS ME: MJC900601H06 921127 12 29. I think it is the day they were duplicated.
