I think it is largely how they describe themselves, but an answer I've come up with based on nothing but vibes is that a “special unit” most likely means that these two members will be the focus of the group, and other instruments and contributions are supporting members or guests. How active / how often they perform also plays a factor, as this might not be their main bread winner and more of a fun side-thing. ReadThis comment is awaiting approval.
