  Well, me personally, I definitely think they were a VK band, albeit one that came out when lines between glam and VK were sorta becoming blurred. A lot of people judge whether a band is VK based on their associations with other bands that were very much, indisputably visual, and VDC had that by playing with guys like Eins:Vier amd Kuroyume, and also with members having ties to groups like Plastic, The Space Cowboys and (the original) Vivid. As far as them being in VK magazines, that is true. I've got a tooonnnnnn of VK magazines, and I distinctly remember them being in some. Below is a link of a lot of the magazines they've been in (just have to do the CTRL+F option), which include very regular pairings with guys like Shazna, Siam Shade, Malice Mizer, Color, Buck-Tick, Sleep My Dear, Deshabillz, hide, Kneuklid Romance and By-Sexual, as well as a good amount of entries in Vicious as well, a historically VK-centered magazine.

  Strawberry Fields weren’t proto-visual. They were one of the first-wave official VK bands, alongside guys like BY-SEXUAL, LUNA SEA and Eins:Vier, and one of the first bands to make visual kei a mainstream mainstay.

And also, the term “visual kei”, as the popular story goes, traces back to April of 1989 when X released the “Blue Blood” album, although there was a heavy metal band during the mid 80s that possibly coined visual kei which I can’t remember the name of at the moment. Therefore, I don’t believe a band can be “proto-visual” when VK was already a thing by their formation, let alone by the time they released demos around 1991.

  But the common story about VK getting its name is from X releasing the “Blue Blood” album in April of 1989. I assume your placedate for October 1990 refers to the first issue of Shoxx, which got its famous slogan “Visual and Hard Shock” from that album. SF are widely regarded, though, as one of the earliest VK bands to bring it to mainstream recognition (the first wave). Although their legacy has indeed been buried over time due to them breaking out at the same time as much, much more popular groups like the aforementioned bands.

  Is this really Naoki’s RIP VAN WINKLE? I found a lineup and it has two members: Taku on guitar and vocals, and drummer Morishita. It is also said that that band formed in 2011, whereas Naoki’s was from sometime in the late 90s.

  John, I agree to some degree. YOUTHQUAKE, to me, are in the same boat as TOKYO YANKEES: both bands were, in my opinion, visual at some point early on. Although perhaps YOUTHQUAKE abandoned the visual image much more drastically and quicker than TOKYO YANKEES. If you look at YOUTHQUAKE now before they split (hell, even over a decade before they split), you'd definitely think they were a non-visual band. But they were, in my opinion, for the first several years of their activity, a VK band that not only had the image, but the associations. But since YOUTHQUAKE were a non-visual group from around the new millennium to their split in 2013, I can see both sides.

  Absolutely, that's why VISUAL SCANDAL can be called proto-visual, and I can definitely see where someone is coming from if they called X proto as well lol. But to me, proto-visual is exactly like proto-punk: bands that were vastly significant to the structure a certain genre. In other words, were bands like Question Mark and the Mysterians, MC5 and The Stooges punk? No, not necessarily. But they were indeed ridiculously important to the scene, hence being proto-punk. That's how I see proto-visual bands: and Strawberry Fields were not proto, but were rather instead out right when visual kei was coined, alongside the first wave of VK. Similar to the first wave of punk bands in the mid 70's, more-or-less.

  Well, they certainly played a lot with VK bands during their early days as BOICE, so they've got that going for them at least. They also did shows with The Cool Chic Child & Stray when they became a major act in 1996.

  I just found this. Nah, I accidentally put this up years ago cuz I saw the cover and assumed it was a VK band since the coverart looked it and it was released on a label that had VK on it. But upon getting the album, I realized it wasn't VK at all and was a jazz album. Sooo... nah, no reason to be here lol.
