A decade after their hiatus, Wedday (ウェンズデー) officially revived with a new lineup in 2022.

Please introduce yourselves.

Ayame, as the only original member, how did it feel returning to the stage as “Wedday (ウェンズデー) ” after all this time?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] I felt gratitude. The most joyful feeling. At the same time, it felt inevitable.

For the other members, what was your relationship with Ayame and Wedday (ウェンズデー) prior to joining?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] I met emma at a taiban event 23 years ago, and we have kept interacting since then through other taiban events, through Sider【Yomigaerushi no Gakudan Sider】 (Sider【蘇る死の楽団サイダー】), and so on.

Metsu (めつ) was an 【accomplice】 (【共犯】) at a shuraba (修羅場) a year ago, acted as a roadie and always willing to help in other ways, and has been with us since. He became an official member as roadie.

੭:honoka was 2 months ago, when they were an an 【accomplice】 (【共犯】) at a shuraba (修羅場). It was our first time meeting but I had an instinct that they absolutely had to become a member, so I invited them, and ੭:honoka felt the same way.

[੭:honoka] Wedday (ウェンズデー) was the sponsor of a taiban event that I participated in. Mr. Ayame (あやめ) treated everyone equally and communicated well with all people involved. I think of him as the perfect event organizer.

[emma] Ayame (あやめ) is a person that I occasionally performed live with.

[Metsu (めつ)] Our first interaction was when I DM'd Mr. Ayame (あやめ) out of the blue on X (Twitter) to say “I'd like to perform at a shuraba!” I still remember how nervous I was, lol.

Please tell us the story of how you decided to revive and came to this lineup.

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] June 2022 was our revival oneman.

In September the new Wedday (ウェンズデー) was born.

In October 2023, guitarist Watanabe Metaru (わたなべめたる) graduated from the band.

In January 2024, roadie Metsu (めつ) enrolled.

In April, vocalist RUZE graduated.

In June, bassist/arranger ੭:honoka joined.

This brings us to the current lineup.

What does the concept “visual a la mode” mean? Has the concept changed meaning since the band's original period of activity?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] Visual kei style. A humble feeling of not yet being able to become the visual kei that we long to be; and yet an arrogant determination to stick to our own style without being influenced by existing visual kei.

The concept during our first period was “a new religion” (新興宗教). But it was risky in many ways so I changed it... lol.

Following the release of a best-album and several new singles, Wedday (ウェンズデー) recently released their new venue-limited single “Houshoku no MESSIAH”.

How did you choose the songs that were included in your best-album from January, “Wedday BEST・A・LA・MODE? (水曜ベスト・ア・ラ・モード)”

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] If you listen to our songs you would definitely choose these too.

Which song from the best album would you recommend for a new listener, and why?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] Daibensha (代弁者). It's simple, but twisted・・・ A song that condenses Wedday (ウェンズデー) .

[੭:honoka] It's BABEL no Tou (バベルの塔). I like the melody a lot. The chorus in particular makes you want to hum along. I also admire the fairy-like costumes in the MV; they're flashy and cute. I want to wear such flashy costumes in the new Wedday too!

[emma] 【Jazz a la mode DAVADA】 because it's a very Wedday-like song.

[Metsu (めつ)] It's Daibensha (代弁者)! I love the composition and lyrics! “There's nothing wrong with this era / But, I want to be the only one going crazy.”

Your 2023 singles , “Mushi Gauka,” “Coffee・・・drink and sleep,”, and “ACTIVATION ROCK FEST.” feature very different styles. Was there a certain strategy behind them?

Mushi Gauka (虫我羽化) — debuting from a cocoon.

Coffee・・・drink and sleep — the invisible prison of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ACTIVATION ROCK FEST — the long-awaited moment of liberation.

The three songs have different tunes but the concept is the same; the sound of each represents the state of Wedday (ウェンズデー) at the time.

For the first time in the history of the band, a member other than Ayame wrote the lyrics for a song. Was there a particular reason that RUZE wrote the lyrics to “Houshoku no MESSIAH”?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] Actually... The working title of the song was Wedday (ウェンズデー). I wanted to know how RUZE—who had already decided to graduate from Wedday—saw the band. So I asked him to write lyrics with our band as the theme. However, since the song was released on his graduation day, if we kept the title as Wedday (ウェンズデー) it would have seemed like we were breaking up. So we changed it to Houshoku no MESSIAH (飽食のメシア). It just felt right.

Your latest singles feature rerecordings of existing songs that previously only featured Ayame (あやめ). How did you change them to integrate RUZE?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] The key of ANTI M PANDORA (アンチMパンドラ) was changed +5 to be suitable for RUZE. The other songs didn't need any key changes, but each one was sung differently to highlight our individual voices.

Wedday recently held the RUZE graduation event and announced a new “shuraba (修羅場)” (live) for June 2nd.

Why are your lives called “shuraba (修羅場)”? Where did the term come from?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] I don't mean this in a good way at all・・・ But I thought it would be interesting if a shuraba (修羅場) {hellish scene of carnage}—which is supposed to be something you “go through” and not a “place” where you stay—could somehow become a place where you belong.

If you could come to enjoy a shuraba (修羅場) {hellish scene of carnage}, then there would be nothing more to be afraid of in life.

You are known for entertaining stage shows and creative furitsuke. What are your considerations when planning a live?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] I imagine what I would like to see and hear if I were an audience member... And during the live, I sense the desires in the atmosphere and act on them immediately.

What is your favorite song to perform live, and why?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] Houshoku no MESSIAH (飽食のメシア). I'm proud of this, the best of our new songs, because it shows the power of all the members in a well-balanced way.

[੭:honoka] It's BRAND NEW WA~VE (ブランドニューウェ~ブ). It's poppy and bright. In the middle, Ayame (あやめ) and Metsu (めつ) make a waving motion, so it's a really fun song for both the performers and the audience.

[emma] Houshoku no MESSIAH (飽食のメシア). I won't go into the long technical details about the drums, but it's really fun to play.

[Metsu (めつ)] It's Houshoku no MESSIAH (飽食のメシア)! Wedday (ウェンズデー)'s latest single! It's addictive beyond words. Just give it a listen. I think it will become the best “requiem” for everyone!

How was your experience at the RUZE graduation event at Hitachi Systems Hall Sendai Theater Hall?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] It was a huge success beyond our imagination. A huge thanks to Wedday (ウェンズデー) hardcore fans, accomplices, staff, operators, and everyone else.

RUZE had the most fun he's ever had. I don't think there's been a better graduation ceremony before that.

And... meeting ੭:honoka.

A fateful and miraculous event.

[੭:honoka] RUZE's graduation ceremony was before I joined, and I was performing with a different band. It was the first time I had seen a Wedday (ウェンズデー) performance, and I was moved by everything: the staging involved the audience, the interactions between Ayame (あやめ) and RUZE, the headbanging in unison.

I was watching them fascinated, thinking “woah, this is amazing—as expected of the kind of band who would organize an event like this.”

[emma] Hall-sized lives are fun! We're not going to lose contact with RUZE, so I just focused on making use of the wide space!

[Metsu (めつ)] I myself stood on stage 5 times as Boku no Riyuu (僕の理由) and Wedday Wedday (ウェンズデー), lol. I think I have grown from the experience! And I think we were able to celebrate RUZE's graduation in the best way possible!

At your next “shuraba” on June 2nd, Manatsu no Shuraba Kaimaku (真夏の修羅場開幕), a mixture of bands will appear. What is your relationship like with other non-visual bands in Sendai?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] Although their styles are different, they share an affinity for music and performance, and share the same purpose/desire of entertaining the audience.

The future of visual a la mode.

Your new member ੭:honoka was announced at your June 2nd sponsored event. What do you anticipate that this new member will bring to the band?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] On stage, they will support Wedday (ウェンズデー) and make us shine not only with their cuteness and glamour, but also their solid basswork.

They have already arranged music that will be used as a backing track for live performances. They are already an honor student exceeding expectations, in both visual and sound aspects.

What can we expect from Wedday in the future?

[Ayame Kokujuuji Mako (殺女黒十字まこ)] Growth. Evolution. Doing what no one else is doing.
